GOVERNOR’S FIRST VISIT TO CAMP TUHSMEHETA!
· Do you know the history of the camp name?
Tuh for touch, sme for smell, he for hearing and ta for taste! (Pronounced tus-meh-hee-tuh)
· Do you know WHOM the camp serves?
Blind and sight-handicapped children AND their families.
· Did you know that over 50% of the trained staff is blind or visually impaired individuals?
The philosophy of the camp is about presenting good role models with exposure to blind and visually impaired people who are successful and live ‘normal’ lives.
The Greenville Lions hold their Lion Meetings at Camp Tuhsmeheta several times a year. Region III, Zone 2 joined the Greenville Lions for a Zone Meeting August 15th.
We met volunteer Lion Larry Alman. Lion Larry is a 1961 graduate of Michigan School for the Blind and has attended and volunteered at Camp Tuhsmeheta over 40 years. Lion Larry is Greenville Lions Club Information Technology (IT) Chairperson, newsletter chairperson and has been the mint chairperson too. We also met Bruce Bishop. Bruce is a 1972 graduate of Michigan School for the Blind and is the caretaker of the camp.
Bruce started at the camp cooking on a wood stove in 1974!
Lion Larry and Bruce have wonderful stories to share with all the Lions.
We are planning a 11E1 District Picnic at Camp Tuhsmeheta for SAT. OCTOBER 1ST. Everyone is invited. Families & friends, neighbors & relatives are included in this invitation. We will eat about 1:00, hear wonderful stories of this very special camp and maybe even have time for a tour.
Admission cost for the picnic is a dish to pass. Bring your own drinks and be ready for a very interesting and wonderful afternoon. We’ll have lots of fun plus door prizes. Save this date!

August 7, 2005
Dear Lion Leaders,
Two milestones are completed in my year already:
1. July 31st Cabinet meeting is over! We had a wonderful meeting, sorry you weren’t able to attend.  Baldwin, Big Rapids, Chippewa Lake, Empire, Evart, Fremont, Greenville, Harrison, Honor, Manistee, Mesick, Onekama, Sheridan, Six Lakes, Traverse City, Vestaburg and White Cloud Lion Clubs were represented at the District Meeting. Pretty Exciting. The Clubs that attended got their roster books. Several of the Region and Zone officials took books for the area they represent. We are attempting to mail all the rest as quickly as possible. Each Club will get a roster book for the President and one for the Treasurer, to help the Treasurer send checks to the correct addresses. If any club needs more books they are available for $3.50 each, just let me know.
2. The minutes are on the District Web Sight: http://lions.silverthorn.biz/11-e1/
3. My first Council meeting was in Lansing August 5-7, 2005, and it was a very exciting experience. Lots of business, lots of camaraderie and really great friendships developing between the 10 Governors & spouses. That will make the Lions of Michigan even stronger and greater this year. Working together as a team is absolutely wonderful!

We are looking for more articles in the newsletter on line. It would be great to have all the Lions really informed on all subjects this year. We can do that through the email newsletters. I’m looking for more Club information. Items of interest, parties, fundraisers, projects, new members and almost everything your club does this year. Lets plan to learn about each other and maybe even attend another clubs activities. Lions are great everywhere, not just in our own clubs. Let’s expand, get to know more Lions and smile more this year. Send your information to your District Editor or to me. Would love to spot light your club.
Don’t forget IPDG Kudla’s appreciation dinner on Saturday, September 10th at 6:00 p.m. Only $15.00 for a baked pork chop buffet dinner. You can’t go wrong if you’re looking for great food and great friends. Make reservations with PDG Jack Burchard, Chef Extraordinaire , call 231-889-4451.

BEST PRACTICES - MEMBERSHIP EFFORTS
Each year Lions Clubs International receives passionate ideas and plans from Lions around the world. By sending these plans to Lions Clubs International other clubs may experience the same results. Last year’s “Best Practices Contest” was a success and many Lions have benefited from the plans that were shared. We’re looking for the best & brightest invitation/recruitment, or retention plan from Lions clubs worldwide

This year the contest has been expanded to focus on two topics:
1. Inviting/recruiting new members.
2. Retention/participation of members.

Pick one of the two topics and tell Lions around the world about your club’s reliable invitation, recruitment, or retention method. Entries should provide a detailed description, focused on the idea and practice that have been used and show quantitative results. These must be actual strategies that have been used.

These brilliant plans will be shared with Lions around the globe – motivating them to enhance their invitation/recruitment, and retention efforts. Thus providing clubs with additional hands to make a difference within their own community.

Prizes:
In addition to participating in a project that is bringing together Lions worldwide, prizes will be awarded to 50 Lions clubs in each constitutional area:
1 – First Place Prize: An International Flag Set and a 1st Place Banner Patch
10 – Second Place Prizes: A 2nd Place Banner Patch and certificate
39 – Third Place Prizes: A 3rd Place Banner Patch and certificate
A distinguished panel of Lions Clubs members will choose the winners.

Deadline:
Entries must be received by October 31, 2005, 4:00 p.m. CST
Winners will be notified in February 2006

Official Rules:
 No purchase necessary.
 Only one entry per club.
Only one contest category plan allowed per entry.
If additional space is needed, one extra sheet of paper may be attached to describe the best method.
All entries become property of Lions Clubs International and will not be returned to participants.
Entries received after the deadline -- October 31, 2005, 4:00 p.m. CST -- will be disqualified.
By entering this contest, participants agree that Lions Clubs International may share participant’s plans with other clubs worldwide and agree that LCI may use their names in conjunction with contest publicity and other materials generated from the contest, except where prohibited.
The decision of the judges is final.
Prizes will be sent to the club president or club secretary. Winning clubs will be notified February 2006.
Contest is void where prohibited and subject to federal, state, and local laws.
Club must be in good standing at the time the award is announced
 Award rules subject to change.

LCI shall not be liable for lost, late, or misdirected mail, e-mail, or faxes.

Limitation on Liability:
LCI, its officers, directors, employees, representatives and agents shall have no liability and shall be held harmless by winners for any damage, loss or liability to person or property due in whole or part, directly or indirectly, by reason of the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of prize or participation in this Contest. Any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by Lions Clubs International Dispute Resolution Processes. Any an all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of pocket costs incurred, including cost associated with entering this Contest, but in no event attorney’s fee. LCI reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel or suspend part or all of this Contest should causes beyond the control of LCI corrupt or impair the administration, security, fairness or proper play of the Contest. LCI may prohibit a participant from entering in the Contest or winning a prize if, in its sole discretion, it determines that said participant is attempting to undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest by cheating, deception, or other unfair playing practices (including the use of automated quick entry programs) or intending to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other entrants or LCI representatives.

Greenville Lions go Danish
Greenville Lions have had a food booth at the Danish Festival since the beginning of the festival in 1964.   It is good public relations for the Lions and we raise moneys for community support with this project. Lions have the  food trailer in the food court August 19-20, 2005,  Lion Kirk Faber is Chairman.
Greenville Lions Club donated $2,000.00 for Camp Tuhsmeheta March 15th.
President Michael Blanding and Treasurer Wayne Kreitner presented the $2,000.00 Check George Wurtzel, Executive Director of Opportunities Unlimited for the Blind.
Opportunities Unlimited for the Blind is a non-profit 501C3 corporation dedicated to helping blind and visually impaired young people become confident, competent, working adults. Greenville Lions Club has been a long time supporter of Camp Tuhsmeheta, often even working on projects at the camp. Camp ‘T’ provides Science Camp, International HAM Radio Field Day, Adventure Boot Camp, Adventure Canoe Trip, Art Camp, Music Camp and more. Visually impaired youth 8-18 and their families are invited to attend the camp programs.
Congratulations to Greenville Lions for ‘making a difference’.
Sincerely,      Governor Janalee
Lions International President has adopted the theme Passion To Excel.
For District 11E1 to Excel this year, I would ask all active Lion members to invite a guest to join them at their regular Lions Club meeting. We could all make a difference in the future of our District if we invited a guest at least 10 years younger than ourselves to visit. We need younger members and the ‘10 year’ younger idea is easy to follow and could be very exciting for every club. But don’t overlook friends your own age either, especially your spouse. We need everyone possible on the club team! I’m thanking you in advance for giving this idea a try.
Sincerely,      Governor Janalee
