PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR ED FLUEGGE
Lion Ed died of acute leukemia Friday, December 23rd.
Daughter Jane Elsinga said Lion Ed died very
peacefully surrounded by family.

PDG Ed was a very special Lion to many of us. He was Governor in 1979-80 and, unlike some past governors; he always stayed active in our District activities.
Lion Ed and his wonderful wife Betty attended every District Convention since I’ve been a Lion except for the one year that Betty’s Uncle celebrated a very special birthday and she just couldn’t be absent at the celebration.
Lion Ed & Betty accepted most invitations and were often chaperoned by their wonderful daughter Jane and husband John Elsinga, members of the Holt Lions Club.
They attended our last two White Cloud Lions Anniversary parties and even won the cherished Hot Tub Night at the famous Newaygo County Shack last year!
Lion Ed accepted many District Chairmanships during his tenure of serving but the most famous chairmanship, in my opinion, was ‘International Understanding & Cooperation’. He talked us all into the ‘school in a box’ international project for our district and he had already finished the paperwork to get that project done again this year.
We will all miss Ed, as we’ve missed Betty. They were dedicated Lions that made a difference in their club, their community and with everyone that knew them.

Answers Will Relieve Questions!
Are you curious about the Leader Dog,
the White Cane or the White Cane law?

Join us
Tues, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. at Manistee High School Auditorium, 525 12th Street, Manistee
Or
Wed, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. at Norman Township Hall, 1273 S Seaman Rd, Wellston.

These workshops will feature Erin Dunn from Leader Dogs for the Blind and discuss the use of a Leader Dog, a White Cane, how to react to someone using them, and the laws surrounding their use.
Manistee Lions Club brought a representative from Leader Dogs For the Blind to the area last year, and this years program supported by all Manistee Country Lions Clubs has expanded from just the students at Wellston Elementary to include students in Manistee Public Schools and KND Schools Jan. 9, 10 and 11 2006

“We’re letting the kids know what’s with the dog, what’s with the cane, and just give them a concept of what is going on,” Silverthorn explained. “In the evenings, it will be more elaborate, and it will also deal with the White Cane Law, and what your responsibility would be if you were driving down the road and saw Ranger and me by the corner.”
“My whole concept, or why I got started with this last year, was to get OUR KIDS and OUR COMMUNITY familiar with what the blind can and cannot do, and how we travel,” he added. “To familiarize people and end ignorance. That is my whole purpose for this.”

Leader Dogs for the Blind is based in Rochester, Michigan and, since it’s founding, has successfully matched and graduated over 13,000 person-dog teams.  Today the staff at Leader Dog is over 100 strong and the facilities, located on the original 14 acres, have morphed from a farm with numerous outbuildings to a superb residence center, a stellar kennel, and well-manicured grounds. This complex is home to students, dogs, services departments, and the support staff that enable Leader Dogs for the Blind to enhance the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals from all over the world.
More information on the area programs is available from Tom Silverthorn, a leader dog user and member of the Manistee Lions Club http://lions.silverthorn.biz/manistee/ - phone 231859-4096 or send e-mail to webmaster@silverthorn.biz.  Information on the Leader Dogs for the Blind program is available from the headquarters, 1039 S. Rochester Road, Rochester, MI 48307 – phone 888-777-5332.  The website is www.leaderdog.org

Convention is not far off and the snow will be gone, we hope.
Planning of the convention is well under way.  Have you mentioned the float to your club.  We hope to see many clubs bringing their little pulled wagon to convention. As was written in the last newsletter we will be having a Mardi Gras theme and a parade on Saturday afternoon. Join us for a fun time.  There will be prizes awarded for the floats, so put your thinking caps on and design a float for our parade.
If you would like to have a table at District Convention for your project, for campaigning or whatever the need may be, contact Lion Pam Schroeder for a form to fill out.
Whether you are coming for the week-end or just a day, we have some great things planned.  See you in Traverse City.

GOVERNOR JANALEE & FIRST LADDIE LESTER’S VISITATION SCHEDULE
The first thing I’d like to do is to thank all the Lions that pitched in and covered my job while I was tied up with my brother Lion Tom’s medical emergency in Indianapolis. Tom collapsed early Nov. 30th while changing a flat tire on his trip from Florida to Michigan. Luckily he was only 2 exits from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was diagnosed with an aneurism that needed immediate surgery. He had brain surgery Dec. 1st and again Dec. 5th. We stayed for the duration in Indianapolis, arriving home Christmas Eve. Tom is now home in Muskegon expecting a full recovery. Lester & I feel blessed to have such wonderful children, son Ron, daughter & husband Lions Audrey & Ray Williams and son Ken for spending so much time in Indianapolis supporting the family and, of course, Lion Tom’s wife, Mary Ann, for allowing everyone to help Tom in his time of need. We became a team and that is what it is all about. Lester & I feel very blessed to have ended Dec. on a very positive note. We couldn’t have done it without your help and we sincerely thank all of you for being on our team!
