District Web Site
Calendar, Forms & IT Info
 By Lion Tom (Web Master)
Well here we are January 2006 already, and taking a look back. Lions of District 11-E1 have made several enhancements to advance communication, between district, clubs, the individual Lions and the community at large.
Our web site will help the general public glean the information needed to obtain assistance, while presenting needed information on cabinet members, appointed positions, committee chairs, as well as the District monthly newsletter, Constitution, By-Laws and Policy Manual for all district lions.
Beginning this month we have 3 new sections being added to our web site. By checking the calendar you will now be able to find activities of other clubs in the district. You can get registration forms for different Lion activities and even find a suggested memorial service honoring Lions that have passed away.
I would like to collect information from all lion clubs on their activities and events in the district to include them in the district calendar on our website. If you have club activities or an event calendar we would like to see your information on the district calendar too. Please send it to webmaster@silverthorn.biz or visit the district website and use the ‘add activities and events’ link on the new calendar page.
You will find all district forms for different lion activities around the district, state, and international, available on the district info pages.
Your district IT Committee is working hard to see that all this stuff is shipshape and easy to get to.  Take a look at what your IT Committee is doing for you and just what IT is by visiting our page on the district web site at Http://Lions.silverthorn.biz/11-e1/ on the district info page.  Let’s make this a great year for Lionism in District 11-E1.

The Chippewa Lake Lions Club
Chippewa Lake, Michigan – Dist. 11-E1
January 11, 2006

Chippewa Lake Lions Club, in an effort to encourage family membership in our local Lions Club, forwards a Resolution to District Governor, Lion Janalee McClure, requesting that a resolution be forwarded to the District Meeting for consideration on Sunday, January 15, 2006.

Whereas Lionism as it is represented by District 11-E1 of the State of Michigan, has actively recruited younger members of families, already involved in the matchless service that Lions International sponsors and promotes worldwide.

Whereas Lionism encourages membership to include spouses in the family oriented Lions program.

Whereas, the cost of membership in Lionism, has become somewhat prohibitive for families, with multiple members, especially of teen and college age.

We propose a Resolution to specifically encourage more family membership in Lionism, locally, at the State, National, and International Level.

Whereas we resolve, that a considerable savings could be found, and ultimately passed on to the local, district, state and international membership.

Whereas Lion members residing at the same address, i.e. spouses, or adult children, not receive duplicate mailings, of the Lions International Magazine and the subscription cost of such duplicate mailings be removed from the second, third, fourth, and so on family members’ Lions dues.

Whereas this would address a wasteful problem at all aforementioned levels of Lionism.

Whereas costs of postage have risen nationally since Jan. 9, 2006 this would seem to pass on a savings, not only to the membership, but also to Lions International, as there would be fewer Magazines being mailed.

Whereas this would also save on precious National and International resources, such as paper derived from living trees, and resources to include all manner of raw materials being used in the production of paper.

Ultimately the byproduct and waste from unused, duplicate Magazines, disposed of unread, (usually upon delivery), in overused Landfills would be greatly reduced, especially where multiple copies arrive in the same mailbox.

We would resolve, that Lions International could be, and indeed should be very cognizant of Lions’ role in the use and misuse of our world resources, and should do all in our power to curtail waste and retain membership at every opportunity.

Respectfully submitted:
Lion Karla Roebuck - President
Lion Barbara Larie – 1st Vice-President
Lion Robert Roebuck – 2nd vice-President

JANUARY 15TH Cabinet meeting received and approved this resolution from Chippewa Lake Lions Club. Resolution will be presented to the General Meeting for action at the 11E1 District Convention April 21st at the Holiday Inn in Traverse City.   Governor Janalee McClure

DIABETES AND YOU
I live with diabetes. I was one of the lucky ones to have discovered my problem by use of a simple blood test. Now with proper diet and medications I am able to function and live quite normally. Diabetes is receiving a significant amount of publicity in the National Media. It is helpful to Lions and individuals alike to be made aware of this potentially cruel and harmful national problem.

Here are 5 Reasons why Lions of Michigan and District 11-E1 should care about Diabetes
       I. It is common:
             - Michigan has the 7th highest diabetes prevalence rate in the United
                States.
             - It is estimated that 1.3 million Michigan citizens have prediabetes or
                 Diabetes.
-Of all people with type 2 diabetes in the state, over 230,000  DO
NOT KNOW THEY HAVE THE DISEASE.
    II. It is increasing:
              - Among U.S. adults, diabetes prevalence rates rose 49% in the last
                  10 years.
              - Type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed among children
                   and teenagers.
    III. It is serious:
               - Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in Michigan.
               - Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death, and is the 3rd highest
rate of risk for diabetes complications due to obesity in Michigan.
     IV. It is costly:
                - In 2002, the average health care cost for a person with diabetes
                     was $ 13,243 compared to $ 2,560 for a person without diabetes.
                - In 2002, the estimated direct and indirect costs of diabetes in
                     Michigan were nearly $6 billion.
     V. It is preventable:
                - Research suggests modest physical activity and healthy eating
can cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 60%.
                - Diabetes complications can be prevented altogether or at least
delayed in most cases with early intervention and treatment.

The above facts were taken from the Michigan Diabetes Strategic Plan published by the Michigan Department of Public Health in conjunction with Michigan’s Diabetes Outreach Networks (DON’S). Your District 11-E1 Diabetes Committee works and partners with these organizations to obtain the latest information and treatments for this growing problem. Funds raised by our District support individules who cannot afford medications or testing supplies. Lions do great work but need to continually be aware, and make others aware of this potentially harmful disease.

Lions Day with the United Nations
is coming up very quickly.

Where: United Nations Headquarters, New York City
 When: Friday, March 10, 2006
Deadline: Registration due no later than Feb. 10, 2006

Lions were present in 1945 when the UN Charter was signed. Lions continue to have a longstanding partnership with the United Nations as we both strive to meet the humanitarian needs of the world.

We celebrate this partnership at the Lions Day with the UN every year. We see the peace poster winners; we meet dignitaries, hear outstanding speakers, sit in the delegate chairs and have an opportunity to have personal tours of the United Nations. The atmosphere of the UN is unparalleled anywhere. It’s a day you will never forget.

Every Lion should consider this opportunity at least once in their Lion lifetime.
Lester & I attended Lions Day with the United Nations with our daughter Audrey & husband Ray and best friends Dianne & Russell Lucas. It was a day that we’ll never forget.

The Registration Form must be sent to Lions International with full payment before February 10th.  To get the Registration form visit the District Website Forms Page  http://lions.silverthorn.biz/11-e1/dforms.html and click on International Forms
